>> ETCHING II: Creating Texture with the Soft Ground Technique
Dates and Times: Two Sundays, January 22 & 29, 10:30am to 3:30pm
Instructor: TBA
Participants in this two-day course will learn to impress soft textures such as fabric, leaves, feathers, etc. into a soft layer of wax on a copper plate. The plate is then etched with the transferred texture and printed on paper. This technique provides exciting potential for the incorporation of unique textures and designs in your imagery, and can be combined with other intaglio techniques. All tools and materials will be provided, however participants are encouraged to bring their own textured materials to experiment with.
Basic etching experience is recommended but not necessary for this course.
Registration fees: $185.00/$165.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)
>> Introduction to SCREENPRINTING
Dates and Times: Two Sundays, February 5 & 12, 10:30am to 3:30pm
Instructor: TBA
In this introductory-level course, participants will be introduced to the technique of screen-printing and the method of combining different colors and layers in their design, using stencils created with a photographic silkscreen technique. Students in this class will learn to transfer their imagery and ideas onto multiple prints on paper or fabric. All tools and materials will be provided, however students wishing to print on fabric should bring their own t-shirts or textiles to print on.
Registration fees: $175.00/$155.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)
>> COLLAGE PARTY!! Exploring Collage through Silkscreen
Dates and Times: Two Sundays, February 26 & March 4, 10:30am to 3:30pm
Instructor: Concetta Zurzolo
“The term collage derives from the French “colle”, meaning glue. This term was coined by both Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in the beginning of the 20th century when collage became a distinctive part of modern art.” Wikipedia
In this dynamic and experimental class we will be using collage and beginner silkscreen techniques to create one of a kind prints or small editions. We will be looking at artists like Jacinthe Loranger and Robert Rauschenberg for inspiration to create our own collages in a fun and laid back environment. So bring magazines, or colored paper and anything else you can think of to work into your collage, and Alberta Printmakers will supply the silkscreen designs! No experience required.
Registration fees: $175.00/$155.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)
>> Multicolour LINOCUT
Dates and Times: Two Sundays, March 11 & 18, 10:30am to 3:30pm
Instructor: Eveline Kolijn
Participants will be introduced to the method of block printing using linoleum, called linocut. An image is carved into the block using specialized carving tools, which is then inked up with a roller and printed on paper. This course will cover the various methods of creating multi-colour block prints through techniques such as rainbow-roll, reduction cut and multi-block printing. All tools and materials will be provided.
Registration fees: $175.00/$155.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)
>> ETCHING I: Introduction to Intaglio
Dates and Times: Two Sundays, March 25 & April 1, 10:30am to 3:30pm
Instructor: TBA
Intaglio engraving (also called etching), as a method of making prints, was invented in Germany in the 1400s, and many historical artists used etching prominently in their work, including Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt, Kathe Kolwitz, Pablo Picasso and Francisco Goya. Participants in this beginner’s course will be introduced to the method of intaglio printmaking, using an engraved copper plate to print their design. The hands-on workshop content will include: plate preparation, ground application, drawing on the plate, etching the plate, plate wiping techniques, printing the plate and editioning your work. All tools and materials will be provided, however students are encouraged to bring sketches or reference imagery for their desired image.
Registration fees: $185.00/$165.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)
>> IMPASSE/FLOW: Using printmaking to explore dilemmas and decisions
Dates and Times: Sunday, April 15, 10:30am to 2:30pm
Instructor: Heather Stump
An impasse can refer to a closed passage, a dilemma, or a quandary–a feeling of being “stuck”—the opposite of flow. The aim of this four-hour workshop is to investigate the metaphors of “impasse and flow” as they apply to situations in life in which one feels “frozen” when confronted by a dilemma or difficult decision, until the dilemma is resolved or a decision made and life begins to flow again. Workshop participants will record their explorations by creating one unique print incorporating dry point and mono print techniques.
Registration fees: $75.00/$65.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)
>> LEARNING HOW TO FLY: Using printmaking to explore risk-taking and empowerment
Dates and Times: Sunday, April 22, 10:30am to 2:30pm
Instructor: Heather Stump
The aim of this four-hour workshop is to explore “learning how to fly” as a metaphor for risk-taking and empowerment. Participants will be invited to “define flight” by first discussing the meaning of the phrase in their personal lives and to create a collage. Following this brainstorming and collage making session, participants will be introduced to the technique of mono printing and assisted to create a unique print that “embodies flight”. Participants will have the opportunity to share the prints that they have created, as well as reflect on the ideas and experiences generated during the afternoon of art making.
Registration fees: $75.00/$65.00 for non-members/members (includes materials fees)
