Space Available: Motel and Birds & Stone- 2013-14 Season

Downstage is now seeking submissions for programming the 2013-2014 season in Motel, a flexible 50-seat black-box performance venue located in the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, and Birds & Stone, a black box space used for rehearsals or intimate performances on 16th Avenue and 1st Street NW in the basement of the Unitarian Church
of Calgary. Emerging and established artists and performing arts companies working in all disciplines who are interested in showcasing their work in Motel or rehearsing / performing in Birds & Stone are invited to submit proposals for consideration. Unfortunately, as demand for the venues generally exceeds the time available, we will not necessarily be able to program all submissions.

Upon the successful scheduling of a proposal, artists/companies will be contacted to arrange more specific details of the tenancy. A venue usage fee is applicable, the weekly rate for performances in Motel is $600 plus GST and applicable ticket fees, and the rates for Birds & Stone are $400/week for performances or $250/week for rehearsals (all inclusive). Please contact Downstage Venue Manager Tuled Giovanazzi at tuled@downstage.ca or 403.294.7459 for additional details after reviewing the attached call for submissions.

Space Available: Rehearsal Space

Hi there,

I'm an independent artist who is opening my own rehearsal space. I need two other artists to join me to help make the space work.

Location: Foothills industrial park (no easy C-Train access), lots of parking.
Cost: Between $250 and $500 a month, depending on amount of time required.
Details: I've got a 500 Sq. Ft space. Available for whatever your practice is. Some storage is available onsite. One day a week (approx 6 hours) will cost around $250. two days a week (approx 12 hours) will cost around $500.

High ceilings, washroom on-site, cleaning staff on-site.

I'm happy to consider any type of artist, I'm a musician, so I will lean that way, but am happy to consider any discipline.

Approximately 4 artists will share the space, and once we have our personnel lined up we will design a schedule that works with everyone's times.

If you are interested please let me know, mattmastersmusic@gmail.com

Note about UAS studios: All UAS studios are rented for a subsidized rate, that means that studios are rented at less than the cost to UAS. UAS collects a damage deposit equal to one month's rent, a 30.00 key deposit for the first set, and a 100.00 key deposit for addition sets for shared studios, all studio renters are required to pay an membership fee of 20.00 per year.

Applications for shared studios are encouraged in order to offset the rental costs to artists. Studio facilities are secure, the building locks after 6PM and on weekends and the floor remains locked at all times, studios are also partitioned and locked for individual security. There is an on-site property manager (employed by the building) and a volunteer facilities director available by phone. Cleanliness of the bathrooms and garbage removal is taken care of by the building, but the common space and kitchen is maintained by the studio renters.

Additional Facilities: In addition to studio space, UAS offers a public access computer, kitchen with light appliances, large fridge, bathroom and utility sink. There is also a common area with a large working table that studio renters are welcomed to use as an additional work space, as long as it is clean and free of materials by the time they leave for the day. Studios are accessible 24 hours per day. There is a large freight elevator to assist studio members in bringing large items into the space and a loading dock at the back of the building. Please note that individual studios are only accessible by a normal sized doorway. UAS is a non-toxic environment, any spraying can be done on the loading dock.
